Windows into Heaven: Russian Icons, 1650 - 1917
June 5 - August 15 An exhibit of 88 Russian icons dating from 1650 - 1917 opens June 5 at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center. Windows into Heaven: Russian Icons, 1650-1917 will run through August 17, 2003. A fixture of Russian culture for more than 1,000 years, the icon was a focal point for faith and helped spread the gospel to people throughout the vast region. The icons in the Cultural Center exhibit are of the type once displayed in every Christian Russian home. To Orthodox Christians, icons are reminders of God's presence and continue as symbols of veneration in the Orthodox Church. During the Stalin years, however, the mere possession of an icon could result in a sentence of death or life imprisonment. At great personal risk, the faithful preserved these works, making it possible for modern audiences to come to know and to appreciate these special "windows into heaven." The icon exhibit, from the James and Tatiana Jackson Collection, will
run through August 17, 2003.
