THE ROAD TO ROME

October 2002 - April 2003
A special exhibit of paintings and watercolors by Father Jerome Tupa, OSB.

The Series
In this series of more than 50 paintings, Father Jerome Tupa, OSB retraces the steps of pilgrims on their way to Rome to pay tribute to the Apostles Peter and Paul. In doing so, he undertakes an artistic and spiritual journey and invites the viewer along. Father Tupa's works are, in every sense of the word, "modern." His remembered experiences have been translated into a painter's vocabulary of vibrant colors, shapes, forms and textures. Colorful and ebullient, this work appeals to people of all ages and backgrounds. The painting depicted here is entitled Florence: The Duomo. It is 76" x 64," oil on canvas, and was completed in 1999.

The Artist
Father Jerome Tupa is perhaps the modern day incarnation of a Renaissance man. A Benedictine monk, professor of French at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota, having earned a Ph.D. in French Literature from the University of Paris, Father Tupa has also chosen to express his spiritual devotion through his art, which he does in an eloquent, engaging style.

For in-depth information, see the artist’s website at www.jerometupa.com.

The Program
The concept of "pilgrimage" as a physical and spiritual journey is the organizing theme behind this exhibition. In conjunction with the exhibit, this theme will be also be explored in special programs as well as lectures sponsored by the Intercultural Forum for Studies in Faith and Culture, the Cultural Center's academic component. Exhibit-related teacher packets and family guides will be available.

This exhibition and accompanying catalogue are made possible through the generosity of the Target Corporation.
